This eggplant is very rare and unique, both the leaves and the fruits are edible.


This garden egg is native to West Africa which is predominately cultivated in Nigeria and is grown and consumed more in the southern part of the country.

The leaves of this garden egg are specific to the Bitter Eggplant which is known as Mkpuru Anyara in Igbo. It is characterized by its small roundish nature, green in color and has a bitter-sweet taste.


These vegetables are known as natural blood pumping vegetable especially when eaten raw. In West Africa, notably in Nigeria where it is found in great quantity, it is called Akwukwo Anyara in Igbo and its seed is also called Mkpuru Anyara, Efo Igbo in Yoruba and Ganyen Gauta in Hausa.

They are considered as curative as well as nutritious diet due to the nutritional contents that serve as medication to certain ailment and substitutes for medical supplements.
